Beasley, William Carl "Billy Carl", US Army Air Corps
4734 S 29th W Ave. Prior to the war, Billy Carl lived there with his
Mother Madge, who worked for Sinclair Oil Company and two old maid
aunts, Miss Grady a registered nurse who always gave us in the
neighborhood typhoid shots and Miss Carl. Billy Carl joined the Army
Air Corps, and upon receiving his wings was shipped to the China /
Burma theater where he flew a Curtiss P-40 in the Flying Tiger
group. He was not one of the original Flying Tigers as the original
group were mercenaries for the Chinese Government. They were not
paid by the US Government. Once the US entered the war, the Flying
Tigers became a part of the US Army Air Corps. That's the group of
which Billy was a member. Once the war was over he came home and
passed away at an early age. He was married and divorced and had no
children. To my knowledge, there are no survivors of that branch of
the Beasley family.

CECIL -
Edward L. "Bill", 83, was born October 20, 1925, in Willow, OK, and
went home peacefully with his family by his side to be with his Lord
and Savior on January 31, 2009. He was preceded in death by: his
parents Floyd and Albina Cecil; his wife of 48 years, Claudine Sneed
Cecil; sisters, Erma Jayne Randolph and Pauline Pierce; and
granddaughter, Danielle Atlanta Lambert.
He is survived by: daughters, Cathy Waller and husband Scott of
Tulsa and Cheryl Lambert and husband Gary of Sand Springs;
granddaughter, Megan Elliott and husband Lance of Tulsa; grandsons,
Matt Waller and fiancé Ashley Shaw of Norman, Quinton, Cole and
Clayton Lambert, all of Sand Springs; great-grandchildren, Gage and
Gracie Elliott; and special cousins, Frank "Sonny" and Billy Richard
Dudek; brothers-in-law, Bill Randolph of Duncan and Bill Pierce of
Houston, TX; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Bill is also
survived by friends he worked with at Texaco, Webster High School
classmates and members from the Berryhill community, where he lived
since 1936. Bill will be truly missed. Bill attended Berryhill
Schools until his senior year. Being the only boy in a class of 9
students, he decided to move to Daniel Webster High School. He met
Claudine, and they became high school sweethearts. They graduated
from Webster in 1944, and they married July 19, 1946. Bill served in
the United States Army during World War II. He was in the 9th Armed
Division of the 3rd Army. Bill was one of the first tank drivers
over the Bridge of Remagen, and he also fought at Battle of the
Bulge. Bill was also a 32nd Mason.
Bill retired from Texaco after 31 years of service. This enabled
Bill to do what he loved most, which was to spend time with his
family and friends. Bill and Claudine spent a lot of time at Fort
Gibson Lake where he could fish and boat with his daughters and
their friends and his grandkids. Bill was an avid fisherman and bird
hunter. A hobby that he enjoyed late in life was golf. He also took
pride in making his yard beautiful which included a wonderful
garden. As long as Bill could be outside, he was happy. The Cecil
family would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to Dr. Simon Levit
and New Frontier Hospice for their dedication. There is no way we
could have endured this journey without you. Irene and Betty, it is
truly a calling what you do every day. Tree, Donna, Barbara, Vicky,
Jamoria, Kimberly, Marie, support personnel, and countless others,
there are no words to describe our gratitude. Thank God for you all.
Bill thought of you all as family and loved you all very much. There

Chilton, Frank.
US Army 1951 and US Air Force 1953-1957, Korean War.
I grew up in West Tulsa,
attended Celia Clinton Elementary school thru the second grade. At
that point because of Webster opening, Celia Clinton shut down and I
finished elementary school at Eugene Field. When I was in the
seventh grade, we moved to Red Fork and lived at 4232 So. 26th W.
Ave., two and a half blocks south of the Sapulpa Highway. Brown's
Drug Store, at that time, was on the corner of South 26th West
Avenue and the Sapulpa Highway. I graduated from Webster in 1948
and my wife in 1950.
I went in the Army on May 29
1951, but only spent 93 days in the Army. I had completed
three years of college at the University of Tulsa. I got
out of the Army in time to start my senior year at TU. I
received my bachelors degree in music in May of 1952 and my
masters in music on June 1, 1953. On June 2,
1953 I went in the Air Force for four years, serving in Air
Force bands. The Korean mess ended three months after I
entered the Air Force. I went in the Air Force because I
hadn't been in the Army long enough to be excluded from the
draft. This was during the Korean mess. I finished basic
training in the Army and I didn't want to go thru that
again. The Army took 47 pounds off me in the three months.
My military experience, because of being in a band, wasn't
in any way meritorious. I fought the battle of Texas for
three and a half years after starting at Vance AFB in Enid.
I was stationed at Harlingen AFB in 1953 for four months.
While I was stationed there, not one North Korean plane got
past Corpus Christi. That's about it.
My
wife and were married on Christmas Eve in 1952 and
celebrated our 56th anniversary this past Christmas Eve. We
had two sons, the younger died in 1978 at the age of 23. We
have two granddaughters and one great-granddaughter.
I began teaching band at Union School, east of Tulsa. I was
there for two years and went in the Tulsa School system. I
taught at Roosevelt Jr. High for four years. Then we went
to Tatum, New Mexico for one year. I then went to Hobbs,
New Mexico and was there for seven years.
In 1971 my
wife and I got teaching jobs in the New Caney ISD, Texas.
That is where we are now. I retired in January of 1991 and
my wife retired in June of 1992.

Excerpts from other pilots in other B-24’s, their descriptions of
the Kassel Raid follows;
Paul Swofford: We didn’t know that anything was out of the ordinary.
We didn’t know that we were going astray. But there were people who
did, and didn’t do anything about it. Now, apparently Chilton’s crew
– the group lead – Chilton and McCoy, who was the command pilot, and
his navigator didn’t know that they were wrong. Except they are out
there on autopilot. I’m sitting back here flying formation.
Everybody except the four squadron leads flew formation. Every
squadron had a lead. They put their airplane on autopilot, and the
rest of us dressed back from them. But we all flew formation, and
tight formation. That was a big airplane. It was hard to fly
formation. I’ll say it took muscle to fly. And it took extreme
concentration to fly close, good formation. So as a pilot, my
concentration is not, "Where is the bomber stream going?" My
concentration is, "Am I socked in there on the wing of the plane I’m
supposed to be dressing off of?" And "Is the other plane on the
other side or above me or in back of me, is there any danger being
created here?" So I’m concentrating almost 100 percent. Now,
remember that since this was only my seventh mission, I hadn’t yet
"graduated" from having to fly off someone else’s wing. Later, I
would be able to lead an element of three or four aircraft.

Coats, Dick Jr USN, South Pacific
Dick Coats
Jr USN 020843 to 122245 torpedo plane gunner
Tulsa County News 112108 By Anna F. Brown, Managing Editor
Dick Coats, Jr. served in the Navy Air Corps as a gunner on a
torpedo plane assigned to the U.S.S. Ticonderoga until it was hit by
two kamikaze planes in World War II. He served from Feb. 8, 1943 to
Dec. 22, 1945.
Coats and other servicemen will be saluted on Veteran’s Day November
11, 2008 which will be celebrated in Tulsa with activities and a
parade. Coat’s plane was one of 18 torpedo planes, which with
50 fighter planes and 18 other dive-bombers made up Air Group 80 in
the Pacific Theater. Coats and crewmembers named their plane Nancy
Jane after one guy’s girl friend and Coats wife. He flew with pilot
Lt. Commander C.W. Shattuck and radioman Keith Townsend. During the
war, Air Group 80 took out 40 bombing sites, sunk or damaged 38
warships, and destroyed more than 200 Japanese planes. “It was all
good experience to me, I enjoyed it,” Coats said. He was prepared to
stay longer, but decided to return to his wife and two children at
the time. He and Jane had a third child later. Once his plane
was hit, and the pilot set the plane down on the water. The three
crewmen bobbed up and down for nine hours in an inflatable raft
before one spied a ship on the horizon. They were rescued.
After the war, he returned to Tulsa and went to see whom he
remembered at the Bus Terminal Company. He ended up accruing 45
years service. Coats had wanted to fly. He was one of about 15
chosen for the Navy Air Corps from 125 who signed up for the
military in Tulsa. At boot camp, they gave him what he asked
for. He attended aviation ordinance school in Norman. He was
assigned to a squadron in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. He didn’t want
to talk about the awards he received, because he didn’t want to
sound as though he was bragging. But, he did say he went on 30
bombing runs, five torpedo runs, and damaged or sunk 31 ships.
Retired now, he is a deacon at Red Fork Baptist Church and is a
Tulsa County Election Board official. He enjoys feeding the birds
and squirrels. He is a Webster High School alumnus. Anna F. Brown

Here's what
author Flint Whitlock says about the incidents in his book about the
US 45th ID, "The Rock of Anzio" (Westview Press, 1998). I've added a
couple comments in brackets:
On 14 July [1943], the fourth day of the 45th Division's
introduction to savage combat, two unfortunate incidents occured
that reflected negatively on the Thunderbirds. Near the Biscari
airfield, which was being assaulted by Captain John T. Compton's C
Company, 180th, a fierce firefight erupted and a dozen of Compton's
men were wounded. A group of thirty-six Italian snipers, some
dressed in civilian clothing, surrendered. Remembering Patton's 27
June speech [fyi: prior to the invasion of Sicily, Patton warned his
troops to watch out for Axis dirty tricks and to show no mercy if
any were encountered] and apparently acting on an order from the
general that enemy troops who had fired upon medics and wounded
soldiers or were diressed in civilian clothes were to be executed,
Compton had the entire group shot.
On the same day near the same airfield, Sergeant Horace T. West of A
Company, 180th, was directed to escort a group of prisoners of war
to the rear for interrogation. After marching the group a short way,
West inexplicably halted the prisoners and shot forty-five Italians
with a machine gun. Compton and West were court-martialed for
killing 73 POWs. Compton was cleared of the charges, but West was
judged guilty and sentenced to life imprisonment. West served a year
of his sentence, was reduced to private, and returned to duty.
Captain Compton was reassigned to the 179th Regiment, distinguished
himself with a number of heroic acts, and subsequently died in
action in Italy in November 1943."

COZORT -- H.
Wayne, beloved husband and father, passed away on June 23, 2004.
Born in humble surroundings, the fourth of ten children to Major
Otho and Lora Grace Cozort in Shamrock, OK on June 30, 1931, Wayne
became a long-time admired and respected leader in Oklahoma business
and politics. After graduating from Webster High School in 1949,
Wayne enlisted in the Marine Corps, and then upon his honorable
discharge returned to Tulsa in the early 1950s, where he managed the
Skelly Service Station on North Cincinnati. Ever industrious, Wayne
opened the Cozort Custom Cabinet shop in 1963, and from there
transitioned to full-time home building, a profession he excelled at
for decades. Wayne met Mary Dale Hanna of Tulsa in 1954, and they
were married on January 21, 1955. A lifelong member of the Church of
Christ, Wayne served as deacon at the Valley View church, and was a
member of the 29th and Yale and Broken Arrow congregations. A well
respected, responsible, and honored Builder, Wayne rose to
prominence in the Tulsa home building scene. He built hundreds of
local homes and developed the following neighborhoods: Valley Glen,
Longview Acres, Gilcrease Hills, Sheridan Valley, Indian Springs,
Forest Trails, Livingston Park, South Park, and South Park South.
Winner of the 1981 Oklahoma Homebuilder of the Year Award, Wayne
served on Governor George Nigh's Housing Committee and was elected
President of the Tulsa and Oklahoma State Homebuilders'
Associations. Wayne successfully ran for a seat in the Oklahoma
House of Representatives (District 67) in 1985, a position he held
for 12 years until his retirement in 1997. Wayne was a gregarious,
friendly, and generous man, dedicated to community service. He was a
strong supporter of Hope Harbor and donated 26 acres to the city of
Broken Arrow for a wildlife refuge and park. Filled with a warm
spirit and love for life, Wayne was loved and admired by all who
knew him and will be sincerely missed. Wayne is survived by: his
wife, Mary; and their 3 daughters, Charissa Cozort of Broken Arrow,

Sgt. Kenneth O.
Dean US Army Air Force 38471151 Linz, Austria
February 25, 1945 (KIA)
Sgt. Kenneth O. Dean was a top gunner on B-24 aircraft assigned to
the 721st Bombardment Squadron, 450th Bombardment Group in the 15th
Air Force. The squadron flew out of Manduria Air Base in Italy. He
was killed during a bombing mission in Linz, Austria on Sunday
afternoon, February 25, 1945 along with two other crew members. Nine
other crew members on his plane parachuted to the ground in Linz and
were captured by the German army. They were repatriated and gave
written accounts of the bombing run that Sunday. The two other men
killed on the mission were the navigator 2LT Frank A Johnstone and
bombardier 2LT Seymour Gordon.
721st Bomb Squadron, 450th Bomb Group; Manduria, Italien. The
last known coordinates for the B-24-J on February 25, 1945 at 1314
hrs was 48 degrees 17 minutes north by 14 degrees 17 minutes east.
The serial number was 44-41188. It had four Pratt and Whitney R-1830
engines, AF Serial Number 447335, cp321841, bp452108 and bp4404468.
Kenneth, known to fellow crewmembers was nicknamed “K. O.” a common
term heard in the mid-40’s in the boxing word for knockout.
Crewmembers liked this newcomer to their crew. The Sunday morning
mission was Kenneth’s sixth mission. Kenneth’s mother was told that
he was assigned to the top gun turret position for the mission, but
switched with the nose gunner because the nose gunner was married
and had children. The nose gunner had a poor chance of bailing out
of the B-24 because of the tight crawl space. Kenneth’s instincts
were on target, just as the same as they had been for years during
sporting events at Webster when he was able to see danger and avoid
it. This Sunday morning he saw danger, and gave his life that
another aircrew member could return home to his family.

US Army, Yokohama, Japan

"I was inducted into the Army May 6, 1954. Took basic at Ft.
Bliss, El Paso, TX, from there to Camp Gordon, GA. I will say
that I tried my best and finished in the top 10 out of a class of
450 odd dog faces. Keep in mind, I WAS 26 AND WAS IN WITH A
BUNCH OF 18, 19 YEAR OLD DRAFTEE'S. I was approached by an
Officer who asked me "How would you like to learn to fly a
helicopter?" I said not in these words, but the meaning was
the same, HELL NO!!
Off to Ft Lewis, WA, on a slow boat to Japan, by way of Adak, AK.
Arrived at last in Yokohama a repo depot. Was approached by a
Nice Officer who asked, "How would you like to work for me?"
What to do? I said yes. Later I found out that he was
West Point. I ended up in an office 10 min walk from downtown
Yokohama. It was the Far East Command Signal Supply Center.
I was in charge of Radios, Radio Test Equipment and batteries for
the FECOM and ROKA Army's. Order from the States and ship to
various places upon proper requisition and TO&E. I found out
later that my position was to be held by a Master Sgt rating.
I had no KP nor guard duty and kept my pass with me at all times.
I was cleared for Secret information.
So far so good. But I was working in an office that consisted
of two thirds DAC who had their familys there and were making good
money. They were doing the same job as I!! That makes
for an unhappy GIO. I was PFC and when Corporals stripes came
out the were given to the Company Basketball Team. I was mad!!
Then in the first week in July, while in the post library reading
THE US NEWS AND WORLD REPORT, I found an article by General Hershey
who was in charge of the draft. Lo and Behold!!! I found that
the draft age was from 18 1/2 to 25 unless a person had been
deferred for any reason and then the liability was extended to age
35. What the hell gives!! I send a letter to US Senator
Mike Monroney on July 8, 1955 asking him to look into the problem as
I was 26 when I was drafted. I received a reply on July 11th
saying he would look into it. On July 30th I received a letter
from Senator Monroney with a copy of a letter from General Lewis B.
Hershey saying that I had indeed been drafted in error and to
present said letter to my Company Commander, discharge proceedings
would follow. On August 19th 1955 I sent a letter to Senator
Mike Monroney thanking him for his help. I received an
Honorable Discharge with all the benefits of wartime service on
September 21, 1955. I was able to return home to my family,
but if I had taken that offer to become a helicopter pilot I was
most assured to have been recalled to Vietnam when the fighting
started there.

Lt Cecil E. Garbey, US Army Air
Corps, Europe KIA
6 June 1944 Rouen, France
Cecil Garbey was listed in the 1938 Daniel Webster yearbook
as Cecil Garby. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on
25 Jul 1942 and was trained as a P51 pilot. Cecil was
assigned to the 335th Fighter Squadron in the 4th Fighter
Group, flying out of England during World War II. He
and three other pilots were killed during a dogfight with 15
enemy fighters on D-Day as they flew a mission over France.
The 4th Fighter Group website has a story of the action on
that day as follows:
ONE GREAT DAY FOR THE ALLIES, ONE BAD DAY FOR THE 4TH
http://www.fourthfightergroup.com/resource/tidbits.html
June 6, 1944 - The Group flew 6 missions on D-Day. They were
up after only a couple of hours sleep. The first mission was
launched at 0320 hours and was a sweep by the 334th and
335th to Rouen, France. It lasted until 0945. Dense cloud
cover claimed Thomas Fraser who went down to become a POW.
Ralph Hofer strafed a couple of trains after blurting out "Whoo,
a train!"
The 336th came in behind the other two squads
and found the same conditions with the same result; too much
cloud cover and no results.
The third mission of the day was the only one
in which the 4th scored any kills. The 334th was on a
fighter bombing mission and attacked a 15 car troop train
with poor results. Afterwards, they ran into 10 plus FW-190s
preparing to land at Evreux Airdrome and knocked down four.
The next two missions were fighter bombing
missions which claimed two pilots downed, Harold Fredericks
was hit by flak, crash landed and evaded back to England.
Oscar Lejeunesse was also hit by flak. He bailed and was
taken prisoner.
The last mission of the day was the worst for
the 4th since its inception when 12 Spitfire MkIXs were lost
near Morlaix, France. Colonel Blakeslee lead a fighter
patrol to the Rouen-Dreux area with the 334th and 335th.
Near Rouen a 20 truck convoy was attacked by 335th Blue
Section when over fifteen 109s and 190s bounced them out of
the cloud cover. The entire section, consisting of Bernard
McGratten, Harold Ross, Walter Smith, and Cecil Garbey, was
shot down and all four pilots were killed. Later, at 2035
hours, Edward Stepp was heard over the radio to say to
Mike Sobanski "Watch
those behind you White Leader!" after Sobanski had requested
a visual check of his aircraft after hitting some wires.
Both were killed. As if that were not enough, Mike McPharlin,
who was visiting his old squad, the 334th, on loan from the
339th Fighter Group in his 6N-Z, was lost after reporting
his left magneto was out and he was aborting. He wanted to
fly "the big one" with his old buddies. He was never heard
from again. The totals for D-Day, 4 destroyed, 9 lost. Seven
of the losses were on the final mission of the day.
Cecil's name appears with other squadron members killed
during the war.
During World War II, R.A.F. Debden Airfield, England, was
home of the 4th Fighter Group, 8th Air Force, from September
1942 to September 1945. Vanguard Yanks of the 71st,
121st, and 133rd R.A.F. Eagle Squadrons traded R.A.F. Blues
for U.S. Army Olives to become the 4th Fighter Group.
Thunderbolts; later long-ranging Mustangs were to help a
dedicated 4th Fighter Group achieve the most victories over
enemy aircraft in the entire U.S. Army Air Corps -- 1016
enemy aircraft destroyed. In remembrance of our 128
comrades who were not to see the war's end, we the survivors
humbly dedicate this memorial.

When Jack Hayes came to, he was flat on his back on the
ship's deck with a splitting headache and only a hazy notion
as to what had just happened. Most of his questions would
be answered over the next few hours: Japanese warplanes had
executed a devastating sneak attack on Pearl Harbor, sinking
several ships. Hayes' ship, the USS Maryland, had been
bombed but was still afloat. A metal hatch blown off its
hinges had struck him in the head. For one
question, however, Jack Hayes, then 20, could get no
immediate answer: Where was his little brother? Jack and
Louis Hayes, one year apart in age and their parents' only
children, had both attended Webster High School, joined the
Navy after graduation and been assigned to ships stationed
at Pearl Harbor. Hospitalized with a head wound and other
injuries, Jack Hayes, a radio operator, began to inquire
about his brother. In all the confusion following the events
of Dec. 7, 1941, it was hard to find out anything.
But Louis Hayes would
turn up. Jack Hayes found the younger Hayes, a pharmacist's
mate, aboard a boat two days later. He had been tending to
the wounded and was now helping pull bodies from the water.
Jack Hayes could finally breathe more easily. He would later
break the happy news to their parents, who had been
mistakenly informed that Louis Hayes was dead. "Even though
he was only a year older, Dad always played the older
brother role," said Michael Hayes, Jack Hayes' son. Taking
that same older brother-like attitude toward protecting his
country would follow naturally.
Retired Navy Cmdr. Jack
E. Hayes, who had a 35-year military career in which he
specialized in the handling of nuclear weapons, died Dec. 12
in San Diego. He was 89. A memorial service was conducted
there at his military retirement community.
Hayes, also a veteran of Korea and Vietnam, will be buried
at 11 a.m. Jan. 31 at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in
San Diego.
Louis Hayes spent much
of World War II aboard submarines. After his military
service, he went into the pharmaceutical industry and lived
for many years in Tulsa, where he was active with Tulsa's
group of Pearl Harbor survivors. He died in 1998 at
age 80.
Jack Hayes received the
Purple Heart for his Pearl Harbor wounds. After recovering,
he resumed his radio duties and would be part of many sea
battles in the Pacific. Following World War II, he earned
a degree in electrical engineering through the Navy.
Assigned to a top-secret Navy nuclear weapons unit, Hayes
was trained in the handling of early atomic-era weapons,
including assembly, maintenance and testing. Underscoring
the highly secretive atmosphere surrounding his work, Jack
Hayes recalled his first deployment in 1951 in postings on
the Navy Nuclear Weapons Association's website. "The
ship's company had been told not to associate with us and
not to even talk to us," Hayes said of his team, which was
on a ship in the Mediterranean Sea. Hayes would continue to
work with the weapons or train Navy personnel who did for
the rest of his career. He retired in 1974. He
received many other decorations including the Legion of
Merit for his service to the U.S. nuclear program. Jack
Hayes' late wife of 59 years, Pearl Hayes, was also from
Tulsa and a Webster High graduate. Jack Hayes is survived
by their son, Michael Hayes.

Hobby, John US Army Air Corps WWII John Hobby died July 17, 2008.
I was drafted and entered the Army at Ft. Sill, OK. In July 1943 I
was given the opportunity to take tests for either paratroops or
Army Air Force. I could not visualize jumping so I took and passed
the test for Army Air Force. I took basic training at Miami, Fl on a
pretty golf course and was housed in some the finest hotels there. I
started corresponding with Bobby while in Fl. Then I went to Decatur
Ill, for College Training Detachment, at James Millikin University..
I had 10 hr. flight training there. Bobby still lived in Flora, IL
and I visited her there. Bobby came to my graduation with my mother.
I then went to SAAC for training and since I had problems with depth
perception and came in short of the runway with power off – I
qualified for bomdardier training. I attended gunnery school in
Harlingen, TX, from there went to Midland-Odessa Air base for
bombardier training. Bobby and her family moved to Hobbs, NM and I
asked her to marry me. We were married Oct. 7, 1944 in Odessa, TX. I
graduated from bombardier training as a 2nd Lt. I was then stationed
the following places. San Angelo Army Air Base, Lincoln, NE, joined
a flying crew and was shipped to Tuscon, AZ. Davis Monathan Air Base
for B-29 Bombardier training. From there to Herrington, KS to be
sent overseas to Saipan. The war with Japan ended, and I then went
to Kirtland Field Albuqurque, NM. Later had enough points to go to
Scott Field Bellville, IL, for separation Dec. 1945. The Lord has
blessed our family abundantly over the years. Many good things have
happened to us.

MILLER -- Archie Dale, born February 28, 1947 in Tulsa, OK, died
Friday, June 17, 2005. He had nicknames of "Crazy Legs Miller"
because of his incredible dancing ability and to others he was known
as "Bubba". To say he was an avid fisherman is an understatement.
Fishing was his passion and he was most happy in the boat pulling in

in the boat he was swimming with them. Dale grew up in Tulsa and
graduated from Webster High School. He went on to attend
Northeastern State University receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree,
majoring in Economics with a minor in Sociology. He was pulled away
from his education temporarily after his freshman year to serve in
the U.S. Army, with one tour as an infantry soldier in Vietnam. At
the time of his death he was employed by Boaters World and was on
the Lowrance Electronics Pro Staff. For many years Dale enjoyed
working at his own business, Aqua Services, a thriving fishing guide
service. He is survived by: his parents, Archie and Maxine Miller of

Recruiter 'loved finding people jobs' He started Lloyd
Richards Personnel Services in 1961. AMBITIOUS Lloyd Richards: As a
professional recruiter, he sought qualities in candidates that
weren't easy to measure. He looked for job-seekers who also wanted
to better themselves, also a quality he had. After working for more
than a decade for Tulsa's Loveless Personnel, he went out and
started Lloyd Richards Personnel Services.
By TIM STANLEY World Staff Writer Flashy
credentials certainly didn't hurt. Lloyd Richards could
boast a few of his own. But as a professional recruiter, he
sought qualities in candidates that weren't always so easy
to measure. For one thing, the ideal job-seekers for
Richards had to "genuinely show the desire to better
themselves," his wife and longtime colleague, Kathryn
Richards, said. "When someone walked into his office and
said, 'I've worked for so-and-so for several years and I'm
ready to move up. Do you have anything?' - that attitude
just opened the floodgates with Lloyd. "He just loved
finding people jobs." Richards possessed that same desire to
better himself, and in 1961, he acted on it.
After working for more
than a decade for Tulsa's Loveless Personnel, he took the
bold step of going out on his own. He never regretted it.
Lloyd Richards Personnel Services, now owned and operated by
his wife, will celebrate its 50th year in business next
year. Richards, who was active with the company for 40 of
those years, died Nov. 14. He was 88. A funeral service was
held Nov. 18 at Ninde Brookside Funeral Home. For Richards,
matching job-seekers with prospective employers proved to be
the perfect career match, and a personally gratifying one.
Although he retired in 2000, he continued to get calls and
letters from former clients whose careers had taken off,
thanks to him. Some were even second- and third-generation
clients for whose parents and grandparents he'd once found
jobs. Some of Richards' jobs took clients far
from Tulsa.
During the 1980s and
early 1990s, the longtime member of the Oklahoma Association
of Personnel Consultants was heavily involved in scouting
for talent for the oil and gas industry. As a top national
recruiter for Ramco Oil, Richards helped tap more than 200
petroleum engineers, geologists and other industry
professionals for jobs at Ramco facilities in Saudi Arabia.
Moving to the Middle East could be a hard sell, but Richards
was up to the challenge. "He didn't just talk to the
candidates but to their wives and children," Kathryn
Richards said. "You would be uprooting your family, and he
was very sensitive to that." Other recruits relocated to
Alaska for jobs on the Trans-Alaska Pipeline.
Richards, whose family
moved to Tulsa from Okmulgee shortly after his birth,
graduated from Webster High School in 1940. Before
graduating from the University of Tulsa, he served in the
Marine Corps during World War II. Richards was a member of
the Tulsa Executive Association and was a Paul Harris Fellow
of the downtown Rotary Club of Tulsa. He is survived by his
wife, Kathryn Bray Richards; one daughter, Linda Malone; one
son, Roger Richards; two stepdaughters, Kim Dickson and
Kendall Bourland; one stepson, Casey Richards; 10
grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

US Marine Corps
Berryhill resident. Served in Korea and Vietnam. He
entered the Marines in 1951 at 17 years old. He was assigned
to the 1st Marine Division and then reassigned to the 5th Marine
Division. Sgt. Wadley was awarded the Bronze Star for Valor in
Action during the Battle of Vegas Hill on March 29, 1953. The
West Tulsa News on July 2, 1953 reported during heavy fighting he
and the other Marines with him were without food or water for 30
hours as they battled. "The Purple Heart was awarded him when
he was shot four times in the leg as he rescued another Marine.
He fired his Browning automatic rifle until it became hot and
jammed. Throwing it away, he went to the aid of a badly
wounded man lying in the open. Although shot four times
through the leg, he carried him back to an aid station, where his
own wounds were cared for." "The citation on the Bronze Star
explained that Wadley worked with Marine engineers removing land
mines from a road which was needed to evacuate wounded personnel.
After clearing the road, he made several dangerous forays on the
steep side of a slope to rescue more wounded men. He received
another wound, but went on helping to evacuate hurt men." Sgt.
Wadley, in typical Marine manner told the West Tulsa News that he
believes the "Marine Corps 'is the finest branch of service in the
world.' Married Gales S. Welch.
